Barbell plate calculator

Enter your target weight and bar to see exactly which plates go on each side, in kilograms or pounds.

Units

How it works

It takes away the bar, halves what is left, and fills each side with the biggest plates first. In kilograms it uses 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5 and 1.25 kg plates; in pounds, 45, 35, 25, 10, 5 and 2.5 lb plates. If the weight can't be made exactly, it shows the closest you can load.

Bar weights

A standard Olympic bar is 20 kg or 45 lb. Many women's bars are 15 kg or 35 lb, and technique or fixed bars can be 10 kg or less. Change the bar weight to match yours.

Questions

How much does a barbell weigh?

A standard Olympic men's bar weighs 20 kg (about 45 lb), and a women's bar 15 kg. Smaller and fixed bars vary, so check the label or ask at your gym.

Should I count the collars?

Standard spring collars weigh very little and are usually ignored. Competition collars weigh 2.5 kg each and should be counted.

Why can't I make my exact weight?

Your gym may not have small enough plates. Most need 1.25 kg or 2.5 lb plates to make every step.
